In 2025, Chile and the European Union solidified a strategic partnership that links the new Interim Trade Agreement with deep cooperation in renewable energy, particularly green hydrogen.
This modern agreement, considered one of the most advanced ever signed between the EU and a Latin American country, eliminates nearly all export tariffs, facilitates bilateral investments, and guarantees preferential access to critical raw materials and clean fuels essential for Europe’s energy transition—such as lithium, copper, and especially green hydrogen.
The green hydrogen collaboration was reinforced by agreements signed between Chilean President Gabriel Boric and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, with European investments exceeding €200 million in Chilean projects.
The goal is to position Chile as a leading global exporter of this clean fuel, leveraging its vast solar and wind resources and its regional leadership in sustainable mining.
Beyond boosting green hydrogen production and exports, the partnership includes technology transfer, professional training, and integration of value chains, benefiting small and medium-sized enterprises on both sides.
The agreement also introduces new chapters on sustainability, gender equality, and resilient food systems, aligning bilateral trade with the European Green Deal and Chile’s National Green Hydrogen Strategy.
This alliance strengthens Chile’s position as a global reference in renewable energy and ensures Europe secure and sustainable access to critical inputs for its climate agenda, setting a new model for international cooperation in the 21st century.
